Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo Book Review

Trigger Warning: Sexual abuse on a minor.

In this book, we follow Alex Stern, a high school drop-out, who, thanks to her ability to see greys is studying at Yales. There, she joins a Secret Society and began to use her ability to suits their needs. As she’s trying to resolve a recent murder, she realises that not everybody at Yales has her best interest at heart.

I loved this book. It’s a 5 star read for me. The atmosphere, the writing style, the characters were all exactly what I wanted when I picked this book up. I had scheduled 4 days to read it and I devoured it in only 2.

I grew quite attached to Alex, who had not had the best life so far and still tries to make things right for people. I thought she had genuine reactions to the events and I felt for her every time we had a glimpse into her past.

I also really enjoyed the perspective of Darlington and I even wanted more from him.

The eerie atmosphere and the whole secret society setting was brilliant and kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole book.

It was my first time reading a Leigh Bardugo book and now I understand why she’s so well-loved in the book community. Her writing is so smart and smooth.

The plot and the intrigue were well-thought. I kept guessing and I had no idea how everything was linked together before the big reveal.

I enjoyed reading this book so much and I can’t wait to read the next one (which doesn’t have a release date yet). But in the meantime I’ll, for sure, pick up her other books starting with Shadow and Bone in April.

It was my first read of the year 2020 and this was a wonderful start for me. However, this book is definitely not for everyone, so, be mindful of the trigger warning.

2019 Reading Stats

Hi everyone! 2020 is here and it’s time to start with a new reading year but before that, let’s just look at how I did in 2019!

Well, I did extremely good! My Goodreads goal was set at 48 books and I actually read … 85! This is just blowing my mind!
This humongous amount of books total to 31 185 pages.

This is the books I physically own that are part of the 85

But let’s break it down a bit more.

This is the genre repartition of what I read in 2019.
I’m really happy with this repartition but I want to include more Sci-Fi, it’s one of my favourite genres and it’s only at 4.1%.

I also achieved one of my goal which was to read at least 10% of Non-fiction.
I really enjoyed having some non-fiction to diversify my reading I loved the one I read and I hope to continue with that for 2020.

This is the age group repartition of my reading on 2019
It changed a lot from 2018 to 2019. I’m really happy that I succeeded in including a lot more adult reads. It’s definitely thanks to the amazing buddy reads I’ve done in 2019.

In the end, I’m so glad I managed to read so many great books this year and I plan on doing even better in 2020.

How was your reading year? What are some of your goals for 2020?
